Police in Canada are on the hunt for a couple from Brooklyn, New York, whose baby has somehow ended up locked in a hotel safe in Niagara Falls on Tuesday.

The family were staying in three rooms at the Howard Johnson on Victoria Avenue when at around 10am, the parents frantically called for help telling hotel staff their infant got trapped.

The child was swiftly rescued from the safe by a maintenance worker after about 20 minutes and was said to be as “alert and crying.”

The family then quickly packed up their belongings and checked out of their hotel before police were called to the scene about one hour later.

Niagara regional police say at this point in their investigation, they New York couple are not currently facing any charges and are treating the case as a “preventable accident.”

Detective Amanda Sanders, of the agency’s child abuse unit, told CBC News police would like to talk to the family to make sure their baby is in good condition after the ordeal.

Sanders said the infant was less than a year old, but she suggested it is possible the baby was able to lock itself in the safe.
