NEW YORK — On Saturday, at 1:38 am, an Amber Alert was activated by the New York State Police in conjunction with the Vermont State Police. The Amber Alert was activated for 4-year-old Kaleiya Hardy, who was taken from a residence in Fayston, VT, by her non-custodial grandmother and the grand mother’s boyfriend. It was believed that the suspects were traveling to Illinois in a 2003 Dodge Caravan bearing VT registration FSC616.
Troopers David Johns and Michael Gardner were on patrol on the New York State Thruway, actively checking rest areas and monitoring westbound traffic for the suspect vehicle. At approximately 2:05 am, the Troopers observed a vehicle fitting the description traveling West in the Town of Dewitt.
At the same time the Troopers were attempting to catch up to the vehicle, a private citizen, Brian Balletine of Liverpool, NY, was traveling West on the Thruway. Mr. Balletine read the description of the vehicle involved in the Amber Alert from a digital message board on the Thruway and within minutes, observed the suspect vehicle in front of him and contacted 911.
The Troopers arrived within seconds, as it was the same vehicle they were attempting to catch up with.
