NASHVILLE, Tennessee — 18-year-old Shirin Khwaga, who detectives have linked to murder investigations from Thursday evening and this afternoon, is in custody after she fled from officers and crashed her Honda Civic into a utility pole on Mt. View Circle at 4:16 p.m.

Two teenage brothers, Markeil Williams (Khwaga’s boyfriend), 18, and Jalean Williams, 15, were riding with Khwaga and are also in custody.

Khwaga and Markeil Williams remained in the Honda after the crash and were arrested there.  Jalean Williams, however, bailed from the vehicle armed with two semi-automatic pistols and a plastic tub of marijuana.

Jalean Williams fled into a field as a police helicopter monitored his actions and directed ground officers to him.  He was taken into custody in the field.

The Williams brothers, who live on Patricia Drive, and Khwaga, who lives on Singing Hills Drive, are believed to be connected to Thursday’s murder of Cianan Napier, 20, on Patricia Drive, and today’s noontime murder of Kevin Ibarra, 16, on Isabelle Lane.

Ibarra was found dead in the kitchen of his residence by a friend.  Witnesses reported seeing two young men leave the home about the time of the shooting and get into a blue/gray Honda Civic driven by a woman, who was subsequently determined to be Khwaga.

Lieutenant Chuck Carter, who heads the Hermitage Precinct’s Investigations Unit, drove to Khwaga’s neighborhood just after 3:30 p.m. to see if he could spot her car.  After driving the streets for about 10 minutes, Carter came upon a Honda that he believed to be hers.

He watched the car, which contained at least one person, as Khwaga approached, threw a backpack and apparent clothing items into the trunk, and got inside.

Carter followed Khwaga and the Williams brothers inbound on Murfreesboro Pike, while radioing other officers what was occurring.  A police helicopter came into the area to assist.  Ultimately, Khwaga became suspicious after seeing a marked unit.

South Precinct Officer Oscar Gomez and Lieutenant Carter initiated a very brief pursuit.  Khwaga failed to negotiate a curve on Mt. View Circle and struck the utility pole.  Two additional guns were in plain view on the rear floorboard of the Honda.

Charges will be placed against Khwaga and the Williams brothers later tonight. -MNPD
